South Carolina’s Horn looks for more in year 2
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina coach Darrin Horn has seen
varying opinions about his Gamecocks this season.
National analysts think South Carolina will be in the middle of
the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division. Around town, Gamecock
fans tell him they think this could be the best team ever.
The high expectations come from Horn’s surprising first season
and the return of two high-profile players. The Gamecocks finished
21-10 last season. This spring, standouts Devan Downey and
Dominique Archie - who combined for nearly 31 points a game last
season - chose to play their senior seasons after initially
declaring for the NBA draft.
That gives South Carolina four starters back from a team that
went 10-6 in the SEC, tying Tennessee for first place in the East.
It was the Gamecocks’ best league mark in 11 years.
