Downey on Naismith watch list

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina point guard Devan Downey
was named to the Naismith Trophy watch list.
    The list was announced Thursday and is compiled by the Atlanta
Tipoff Club. Downey was among six Southeastern Conference players
named to the list by the club.
    The Naismith Trophy goes to the top player in college
basketball. North Carolina’s Tyler Hansbrough won the award last
season.
    Downey, a junior, leads South Carolina with 20 points a game.
He’s also averaging 4.8 assists and 3.5 steals through the
Gamecocks first eight games.
