Benedict College struggling financially

The Education Department notified Benedict in April that it missed the standards set for financial responsibility under the federal financial aid program. The school, which is up for re-accreditation next year, scored 1.3 out of a possible 3.0 on a test of financial fitness. Colleges and universities must score at least a 1.5 to be judged “responsible.”

Obesity costs US system $147B

Obesity-related diseases account for nearly 10 percent of all medical spending in the United States or an estimated $147 billion a year, U.S. researchers said Monday.
The CDC outlined 24 new recommendations on how communities can combat obesity in their neighborhoods and schools by encouraging healthier eating and more exercise.

Gov nixes bulk of $5.7B budget plan over stimulus

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford on Tuesday again blocked his state from receiving federal stimulus cash, this time by vetoing the bulk of a $5.7 billion spending proposal that included a requirement he take the money.
