The agency’s Web site said the Port of Charleston will remain open until 5:30 p.m. Thursday to trucks carrying containers for shipment and trucks picking up containers.

From Washington to Georgia, Southeast gears up for T.S. Hanna; Category 4 Ike hot on its heels

The National Hurricane Center has issued tropical storm and hurricane watches for the South Carolina coastline in advance of Tropical Storm Hanna.

The National Hurricane Center says the storm, perhaps growing to a Category 1 hurricane, could threaten the state’s north coast early Saturday.

Military installations across the Carolinas are making preparations for tropical weather approaching the Southeast.

Gov. Mark Sanford was scheduled to speak at the Republican National Convention Monday night, but that night’s agenda was cut short and his speech was postponed because of Hurricane Gustav’s landfall in Louisiana.

Tropical Storm Hanna is now on the move and is expected to accelerate toward the Southeastern United States over the next couple of days.  Maximum sustained winds are now near 65 mph as the storm has become better organized this evening.

The Air Force ball, originally scheduled for this Saturday at the Charleston Air Force Base, has been canceled thanks to Hanna.

The threat of high winds and rough seas from Tropical Storm Hanna has prompted the State Ports Authority to restrict port operations. Land traffic in and out of the Port of Charleston will be restricted to trucks coming in to pick up containers on Thursday.

Emergency officials are urging residents of the South Carolina coast to have plans ready in case Tropical Storm Hanna spins toward the state.

Insurance companies have plans well underway to help in the event Tropical Storm Hanna heads toward South Carolina. Companies have prepared for adjusters to move in as soon as the storm ends to begin handling customers’ insurance claims. 

Local school districts are keeping a close eye on Hanna and are making plans to deal with a possible weather emergency. Charleston County school district says all after school activities, including sports are canceled for Wednesday
