The average cost of a gallon of regular gasoline has fallen below the $3 mark for the first time since mid-February.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oil fell Tuesday as concerns the global economy could slip into recession and drag down demand outweighed optimism over the bank bailout plans.

For many across the southeast, there is nothing to do but wait. In Atlanta half of all gas stations were completely dry and closed.

Last Week when the threat of Hurricane Ike was approaching the Texas Coast There was a lot of talk about the potential for higher gas prices. It didn’t take long for these fears to become a reality, as we watched the prices here in south Carolina jump from 3-61 a gallon to 450 even 523 at some stations in just a matter of hours.

Spokesman Mark Plowden said that Attorney General Henry McMaster wants to know when stations and suppliers decided to change prices, and by how much.

For many, this is the first trip home after Ike even if there is very little left of most of the homes here.

President Bush will be in Texas today to tour some of the areas hardest hit by hurricane Ike.  He’ll get a briefing on relief efforts as well as the ongoing search and rescue operations.
