Awendaw to have first Mayoral election since town was founded
The Town of Awendaw will be holding their first Mayoral race with a choice on November.
Mayor William Alston has been the Mayor in Awendaw since the town started nearly 17 years ago. This is the first year he will have a challenger in the re-election race.
Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem Samuel Robinson is challenging Alston this year. Robinson says the public water system, or the lack of an effective public water system in Awendaw is one of the reasons he is in the race.
Currently some residents of Awendaw have been forced by a town ordinance to pay more than $900 to tap into a water line. However, the water is not yet flowing to those homes.
Mayor Alston says there have been a number of funding issues preventing the water lines from being turned on for residents.
Alston tells News 2 that the town now has permits to turn the water on for about 50 homes. The first of those homes MAY be able to have public water as soon as this Monday.
