Coroner: SC true crime author drowned

A coroner has ruled that an author who wrote books about some of South Carolina’s most infamous murders drowned in the Pee Dee River near the U.S. 76 bridge.

After a drowning, a presumed drowning and 12 rescues all in a week’s time Sullivan’s Island Town Council will meet at 6 pm tonight at Town Hall, but it remains to be seen if there will be discussion about protecting the beaches with lifeguards.

Swimming Instructions for children

Ameriocan Academy of Pediatrics researchers are warning parents and caretakers that their research suggests that informal swimming instruction (i.e., through mom, dad, etc.) had no effect on drowning rates at any age.  They are recommending formal swimming instructions for children 5 and older.

Now, a new study questions the wisdom of waiting to teach young children to swim. In the March issue of the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, researchers report an 88 percent reduction in the risk for drowning in children one to four who had received formal swimming lessons.

Man found dead after wandering from home

Police are investigating a possible drowning in a neighborhood pond in Summerville.  A neighbor found the body of 51 year old Nathaniel Irick in a pond at the back of the Palmetto Park neighborhood Wednesday evening.
