UPDATE: Lawmakers kill school choice bill

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina legislators have again killed a bill that would have used taxpayer money to help parents send their children to private schools.
   
The Senate Education Committee on Wednesday sent the bill back to a subcommittee, essentially killing the proposal for the year because it was the committee’s final meeting this session.
   
The subcommittee advanced the bill two weeks ago with a negative recommendation.
   
The idea of helping parents afford private tuition through tax credits and scholarships has failed repeatedly in the Legislature since 2004. Advocates say it provides students a way out of failing schools, but opponents say taxpayer money shouldn’t support private schools.
   
The latest version would have allowed parents up to $4,900 in tax credits per student.
