South Carolina legislators returning to Columbia this week expect to override the governor’s veto of what many consider their biggest accomplishment this year - a bill restricting the payday lending industry.

Gov. Mark Sanford’s veto frustrated legislators, advocates for the poor, and payday lenders alike, after they pushed through a compromise in the final hours of the regular session May 21. The bill is the best known among 10 vetoes lawmakers will take up during the special session.

The law would limit borrowers to one loan at a time, up to $550, and require lenders check a new online database to ensure borrowers have no outstanding loans elsewhere.

Because the compromise passed 41-4 in the Senate and 102-6 in the House, most believe the veto will be handily overridden.
