COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina officials expect to release the state’s unemployment numbers for April, and if they rise any higher, it will break a 26-year-old record.

The March unemployment rate was 11.4 percent, matching the highest rate ever in the state, set in January 1983.

Unemployment in South Carolina has increased for 13 straight months and the number of unemployed workers in the state has more than doubled during that time to around 248,600 people.

The national unemployment rate in April was 8.9 percent.

South Carolina ranked third in the nation in unemployment in March, behind Michigan and Oregon.
