South Carolina authorities say a 6-year-old girl has died after she was accidentally shot by a relative who was unloading a gun.

Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Maj. Dan Johnson said the girl was shot once at a home in Spartanburg around 1 p.m. Friday.

Johnson says the man was unloading the gun because he didn’t want the child in danger.

Authorities say the girl died at the hospital shortly after the shooting.

The coroner’s office has not released the girl’s name.

Officials said it wasn’t immediately clear how the man and the child were related.

I have been a gun owner for year and to this day I do not know how people can say in cases like this it was an accident. In this case he should not have allowed the child in the room when he was unloading the gun and if he was unloading the gun way was his finger on the trigger. In this case it was poor gun safety that caused the shoot. What was he thinking? Please do not think this is a reason to band guns. This person was not thinking when he was unloading his gun!!
