SC man gets life for shooting death of his wife

A South Carolina man who prosecutors say was getting rid of the gun he used to kill his wife as he told 911 operators he had come home and found her dead has been sentenced to life in prison.
   
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports a Beaufort County jury found 26-year-old Jose Herrera guilty of murder Wednesday. His 43-year-old wife, Catherine, was shot in the back of the head in their home in September 2007.
   
Prosecutors say Jose Herrera felt like his wife was his property and killed her, then got rid of the gun as he called 911 and said he had just gotten home and found her dead.
   
Defense attorney Lauren Carroway argued Herrera didn’t mean to kill his wife.
   
Herrera had no reaction to the verdict and didn’t speak before he was sentenced.
