Report: Sirens did not work when tornadoes hit upstate
Published: May 20, 2009
Many warning sirens never went off before tornadoes ripped through the Upstate last month, according to ‘Greenwood Today’.
The National Weather Service confirmed six tornadoes hit in Greenwood and Abbeville Counties on April 10th. The twisters left much damage behind.
Greenwood County Sheriff’s officials say only rural fire departments heard the sirens.
They blame a lack of training and have replaced Tina Stone at the 911 Center with John Nichols, who served in the Air Force for two decades.
