A South Carolina sheriff says he is almost certain that human remains found in a wooded area are those of a missing nurse from Union County.

Sheriff David Taylor broke the news about 31-year-old Maria Fernandez of Union at her mother’s home Thursday afternoon.

He says he is 99.9 percent sure about the identity of the remains.

Fernandez was last seen Sept. 3.

Taylor told the family he doesn’t know how Fernandez died, but promised he would find out who is responsible for her death.

Police have said Fernandez’s boyfriend is a person of interest in her disappearance and is not cooperating.  He has not been
charged with a crime.

Fernandez’s family had complained that police weren’t doing enough to find her.
