A prosecutor says a 15-year-old South Carolina girl shot to death by police officers after a suspected store robbery was holding a BB gun that looked like a 9 mm pistol.

Solicitor Kevin Brackett said Wednesday that officers thought Yvette Williams had a real gun when they shot her three times last week.

Brackett says the two officers were justified when they shot the teen last week after authorities say she robbed a grocery store.

Brackett says the officers fired about a dozen times. He says it’s unclear if the teen fired any BB shots.

Hundreds of mourners gathered Tuesday at Williams’ funeral service. The girl’s family have expressed outrage over the shooting.

The State Law Enforcement Division has not completed its investigation.
