Augusta, GA—Flooding is still a concern in Augusta…19 years after the big one…

Raes Creek was one of the city waterways that overflowed its banks in October 1990.

Now, nearly two decades later, Augusta leaders will be looking deeper into flooding on Raes Creek.

A Commission committee approved $180,000. The money will pay the city’s half of an Army Corps of Engineers study of Raes Creek.

Since the 1990 flood, millions of dollars worth of work has gone on in Raes Creek, so the study will determine what, if anything, the city can do to make it less flood prone.

Abie Ladson, Augusta Engineering Department director: “I’m not sure, yet. We have a meeting October 30th with the Corps. Hopefully there, we can see if there are things that can be done or if we can’t do anything, but you need to look. We do need to look.“

Ladsen says the city will use left over sales tax money to pay for the study, if the full Commission approves. Ladsen says the study should take about a year.
