Clemson University is raising in-state tuition by 4.5 percent and eliminating more than 450 jobs to cover a budget cut of more than $45 million. The university Board of Trustees voted Thursday to raise in-state tuition and fees by about $234 per semester for in-state students.

Out-of-state students will see a 7.5 percent increase, or about $878 per semester. University President James Barker says Clemson received nearly
$15 million in federal stimulus money that kept tuition from climbing even more.

Barker says most of the job cuts came from positions that were already vacant, were filled with temporary or contract employees or from workers who accepted the school’s early retirement plan.
