Charleston clinic in lung cancer trials

  Researchers at Charleston Hematology Oncology Associates are now testing a vaccine, called Lucanix™, to see if it can prevent or delay recurrence of lung cancer in patients with advanced disease. Lucanix is currently in Phase III trials.  Patients will get the vaccine and others will get a placebo. Lucanix™ is not meant to be used to prevent a person from getting lung cancer, only to prevent or hold off recurrence in patients who’ve already been diagnosed with advanced stages of the disease. It specifically targets NSCLC, so is only being tested on patients with that form of the cancer.
  Traditionally, lung cancer is treated with surgery (when possible), chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. But even if a treatment is initially successful in stopping the growth of the cancer, the disease often comes back.
