New contraceptive label

Federal authorities are adding a new precaution to a contraceptive skin patch label. A new study shows an increased risk of blood clots among women using the Ortho Evra Contraceptive patch compared to those using birth control pills. It was conducted in women age 15-44.

The Food and Drug Administration says it is adding the study results to the drug's label. Officials say blood clots could potentially lead to a lung embolism.

The FDA says it believes the patch is a safe and effective method of birth control. But authorities recommend that women with concerns or risk factors for blood clots talk with their doctor about the risks and benefits.
