2 Cents - The Smoking Ban Wagon

“The Smoking Ban Wagon”

The city of The Isle of Palms is the latest town trying to jump on the “smoking ban wagon” after the city council voted Tuesday evening to pass the first reading of the ban that would snuff out public smoking.  If passed, the Isle of palms would be fourth town in our area to be smoke free joining the likes of Mount Pleasant, Sullivan’s island and the city of Charleston.

This latest addition begs this question…

Why Not join the ban?

Studies have shown that adhering to a smoking ban in public greatly improves the air quality by reducing the levels of suspended particles that we inhale.

Cleaner air to breathe? I’m in.

Now, I know that the argument has been made that bans such as these somehow infringe upon the rights of the business owner.  It seems… ideally American to say “it’s my property and I can do what I want on it” but come on? Can you really? Let’s face it.  This ban isn’t some new tactic to steel away your rights like a thief in the night.  The government already dictates much of your business anyway. They tell you where you can build, what time you can be open until.. They can even tell you how many parking spaces you can have.

This particular so called infringement just happens to benefit the health of everyone around.
