A key lawmaker involved in hammering out a bailout for the U.S. auto industry says General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner “has to move on.“
Sen. Chris Dodd, chairman of the Banking Committee, says Wagoner’s departure should be one of the strings attached to offering government aid to automakers.
Appearing on CBS’ “Face the Nation,“ Dodd said car industry executives are guilty of a “head-in-the sand approach” to problems that have plagued the industry for years.
The criticism reflects the frustration shared by others on Capitol Hill who believe Big Three executives are have engaged in years of missteps, mistakes and arrogance.
House and Senate aides are working out the details on an agreement that would give billions to automakers within a week. Congressional aides say a government-run board and overseer would
manage the aid. The size of the package hasn’t been finalized, but is expected to be about $15 billion.
