President Barack Obama has told Congress that he’s lost confidence in the inspector general who investigates AmeriCorps and other national service programs.
The president must give Congress 30 days’ notice before removing Gerald Walpin from the post. He did that Thursday in a letter and, in the meantime, has suspended Walpin with pay.
Walpin has drawn criticism for his handling of an investigation involving Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson. Johnson is a former basketball star and an Obama supporter. Walpin was examining Johnson’s nonprofit group, St. HOPE Academy, which received hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal grants from the Corporation for National Community Service.
