Obama looks West, to the Web in health care fight

President Barack Obama is turning his eyes West and hitting the Web as he steps up his offensive against critics of his proposed health care overhaul.

He’s expected to keep up attacks on what he calls “wild misrepresentations” of his plan. He takes the campaign to to two more town-hall style meeting later this week in Montana and Colorado, and on the White House Web site.

Obama’s new message has been sharpened amid sliding public support for him and his plan. It targets a vital and especially skeptical audience: people who have health insurance and aren’t
convinced of the need to spend billions of dollars to change the system or cover people who lack insurance.

The White House is also launching a Web site to counter critics, as well as asking supporters to share with them e-mails they say misrepresent Obama’s positions. It’s a tactic similar to the one
the tech-savvy Obama campaign used to win the White House.

Meanwhile, congressional Democrats have set up a “war room” in the Capitol to try to help lawmakers answer questions on the issue posed in town-hall meetings and elsewhere.
