A Nevada woman has her cervix removed after being told she had an invasive form of cancer. But after the surgery, she was told it was all a mistake.
Heather spaniol struggles to read through letters she fully intended to leave for her children. Until a few weeks ago, the 30-year-old mother of two was convinced she was dying, all because of a report she received from “LMC Pathology Services.“
After a routine pap smear, her physician ordered a biopsy from the lab and the final diagnosis came back as a carcinoma.
Heather says “at that point it was invasive they told me. So that means it could have spread. So I went into surgery not even knowing if I was going to wake up and them tell me it spread everywhere, you’re dying.“
Heather had two major procedures done, a pelvic lymph nodes disectomy and a radical trachelectomy, which resulted in the removal of her cervix.
Heather’s attorney Jesse Sbaih says “she did everything she was supposed to do. Unfortunately in this case the lab had it very wrong.“
Seven days later Heather learned it was all a mistake. An amended lab report showed a new final diagnosis which stated “no evidence of invasive malignancy.“
Heather says “I was crying. I was mad. I don’t think I believed it. Who, who can make such a big mistake and tell me that I have cancer? And I really don’t have cancer?“
We did contact LMC Pathology Services, they referred us first to their insurance company, then to their attorney, who replied quote, “we have no comment.“
Heather says “you know it was a very traumatic, traumatic thing. I don’t wish this upon anybody.“
