US fears Pakistani role in India attacks

A U.S. counterterrorism official says some marks of this week’s terror attacks in India are consistent with the work of Pakistani militant groups.
He points to Pakistani groups that have fought Indian troops in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir. The groups are reported to be linked to al-Qaida.
India and Pakistan have fought two of their three wars over Kashmir.
The official adds that it’s too early to know who was responsible for the Mumbai attacks.
But U.S. officials are worried about a potential surge in violence between India and Pakistan in the wake of the attacks, which killed at least 195 people. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has been keeping in touch with India’s foreign minister and Pakistan’s president since this week’s crisis began.
