Obama nominates Willard to head US Pacific Command

HONOLULU (AP) - President Barack Obama has nominated Pacific Fleet Commander Adm. Robert F. Willard to lead all U.S. forces in the Pacific.
   
If confirmed by the Senate, Willard would succeed Adm. Timothy Keating as the head of the U.S. Pacific Command at Camp H.M. Smith in Halawa Heights.
   
Willard has led the Pacific Fleet since May 2007.
   
The admiral and former F-14 aviator previously served as the vice chief of naval operations.
   
During the 1980s, he was the operations and executive officer of the Navy Fighter Weapons School featured in the Hollywood movie “Top Gun.“
   
He also appeared briefly in the movie.
