New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is trying to shut down a debt-collection agency he says uses sexual threats and impersonates police.

Cuomo is suing several companies operated under the Benning-Smith Group. Cuomo said Tuesday they are violating state and federal laws.

He says one collector repeated the name of a consumer’s daughter and described sexual attacks he would commit against her unless the debt was paid.

He says other collectors called consumers drunks, deadbeats and in one case a low-life piece of trash.

Cuomo says complaints have surfaced in New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina and Texas.

The operators didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment left at one of companies.
