A 15-year-old student is hospitalized in critical but stable condition after shooting himself in the head at a Louisiana middle school.
Sheriff’s officials say the student, whose name was not released, pointed a handgun at a teacher, then fired over her head. He then went into a bathroom and shot himself.
The shooting occurred at Larose-Cut Off Middle School, which is located about 45 miles southwest of New Orleans.
The sheriff of Lafourche Parish says there’s no indication the boy had been in trouble with the school or the law. And he’d never been in a class taught by that teacher.
Several other students described him as a quiet youth who never talked about guns or violence. He was a year or two older than most of his classmates.
The school was locked down, and the students were evacuated room by room to a nearby VFW hall.
