Chicago school for gay and bullied youth on hold
Published: November 19, 2008
Plans for a high school for gay and bullied youth in Chicago are on hold.
Backers of the school, which would be called Social Justice Solidarity High School, have pulled their proposal.
They say they want another year to finalize their plans. Chicago’s board of education was scheduled to vote on the proposal Wednesday.
The concept of the school has changed since a public hearing in early October.
It was originally meant to be a safe haven for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and other youth.
But now the idea is to offer protection regardless of “orientation.“
Ministers, gay activists, and conservatives argued against segregating gay students.
One gay activist said the bullies should be put in their own high school, not the gay kids.
