Captured Somali pirate to face trial in NY

The lone pirate who survived the attempted hijacking of an American cargo ship will be put on trial in New York.
The U.S. had been considering having the young Somali tried in Kenya. But an official tells The Associated Press that New York was chosen because the FBI office there has a history of handling major African crimes involving Americans.
The suspect, identified as Abduhl Wal-i-Musi, is believed to be in his late teens, possibly as young as 17. If he is that young, he could still be tried in federal court and would face a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.
Three other Somali pirates were killed Sunday by Navy SEAL snipers under authorization from President Barack Obama to save the life of Richard Phillips. The captain of the U.S. cargo ship, the Maersk (mersk) Alabama, had been held hostage for five days in a lifeboat.
