The State Highway Patrol stopped the car carrying Governor Mark Sanford for speeding on Hwy 385 Tuesday, but the trooper did not write a ticket for the SLED agent driving the car.

After reviewing a tape of the stop, Mark Keel, Director of the South Carolina Department of Public Safety issued a statement Wednesday.

“An individual, who exited the Crown Victoria and approached Lance Cpl. R. S. Salter, indentified himself as a State Law Enforcement Division agent. When asked why he was speeding, the agent said he was transporting the Governor”, said Keel.

Keel said, Salter returned to his vehicle without giving the agent a ticket.

As a result of his review of the incident, Keel says speeding charges will be filed against the SLED agent.

In 2006 Sanford’s office was highly critical of Lt. Governor Andre Bauer when troopers stopped Bauer twice for speeding, but did not issue tickets.

Another example of politicians and law enforcement officials who think they are above the law.
