Incumbent Henry Brown has thwarted a well-funded challenge to win re-election to the U.S. House from South Carolina’s 1st District.

The 72-year-old retired vice president of Piggly Wiggly Carolina Inc. won a fifth term in Congress.

Brown defeated 58-year-old Democrat Linda Ketner. The management consultant and activist raised and spent more than Brown, including making a $700,000 loan to her own campaign.

She ran a barrage of television ads in the district that reaches from south of Charleston along the coast to the North Carolina state line.

Brown’s campaign focused on the need for the nation to become energy independent.

Ketner told News 2 she will not concede until 10 am Wednesday at the earliest.
