West Ashley High School English teacher Katherine Henderson had no idea she was being considered for the honor that is known as the “Oscars of Teaching”.

At an assembly disguised as a speech by the state’s Superintendent of Education, Dr. Jim Rex surprised Henderson with the Milken National Educator Award and the $25,000 prize that comes with it.

According to a news release from the South Carolina Department of Education, the Milken Awards were created in 1985 to reward, retain and attract top professionals to the nation’s schools. More than 50 unsuspecting educators across the country are being surprised this month with the news of their award.

Henderson said she almost left the teaching profession several years ago, but wound up taking a job at West Ashley and says she is proud to share this award with her fellow teachers.
