A social worker says a Tennessee man who confessed to raping and killing a South Carolina college student has suffered a life marred by alcoholism, mental illness and sexual abuse.

Marti Loring testified Wednesday that Jerry Buck Inman’s father abused him as early as age 3. The social worker says Inman began drinking as early as age 9.

Inman pleaded guilty last year to raping and killing Clemson University student Tiffany Souers. The 20-year-old junior from Ladue, Mo., was found in her off-campus apartment in May 2006, the bikini top used to strangle her still around her neck.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

Inman’s stepfather briefly took the stand Wednesday. Ken McArthur said tearfully that his wife has been hospitalized since the sentencing began in September.
