A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper was rushed to the hospital Wednesday after his vehicle ran off the road an into a tree alongside I-26 in Dorchester County.

Patrol spokesman Sid Gaulden says Lance Cpl. A.S. English was taken to a hospital on Wednesday after his patrol-issued sports utility vehicle struck a tree in a median.

Gaulden says English could be released from the Medical University of South Carolina later Wednesday.

He says it’s not clear why English drove off the road.

Troopers don’t think he was responding to an incident.

No other vehicles were involved, and a K-9 officer in the SUV with him was not injured.

Sheriff’s deputies from Dorchester and Charleston counties are investigating.
