Shem Creek clean-up

Oil, sewage, battery acid, you might not know it but it’s because of abandoned boats in the area, rotting and polluting, the depths of Shem Creek.

Today, clean-up started with a crane pulling wreckage and debris out of the creek. Hillary Repik is the storm water manager for the Town of Mount Pleasant, she spearheaded the cleanup process, applying for 37,000 dollars of state grant money back in September.

“When you have boats that are sunken at your main tourist attraction, your talking economic development and other things, when people go up and down the creek and see the junk it does not make for a good scene.“

The clean up process will finish up tomorrow. The Mount Pleasant Police Department will be seeking information on sunken boat owners to recoup the cost of removal.
