Several emergency shelters have been opened in Charleston County as area leaders prepare for Tropical Storm Hanna’s approach.
   
County leaders have also called for a voluntary evacuation for people living east of Highway 17 and anyone living in low-lying areas or in a mobile home.
   
Three shelters have been opened in North Charleston, and a pet shelter is also available at the North Charleston Coliseum.
   
On Thursday, Gov. Mark Sanford called for voluntary evacuations in Georgetown and Horry counties. Sanford said three shelters in those areas would be opened, and 70 Highway Patrol troopers will be sent to the area to monitor traffic.
   
The National Weather Service says the storm that could bring rain and wind to North and South Carolina as early as Friday night.
