Governor Sanford’s representative, Joel Sawyer, tells News 2 that the governor will hold a press conference and meet with reporters to answer questions at 2:00 Wednesday afternoon.

The State newspaper in Columbia is reporting that Governor Mark Sanford was actually in Buenos Aires and not hiking on the Appalachian trail as his office told the press and state officials earlier this week.

A reporter met with the Governor in an Atlanta airport when he arrived back in the United States.

According to the Associated Press, Sanford said he was alone on the trip. He declined to give any additional details about what he did other than to say he drove along the coastline.

When The State reporter asked Sanford at the airport why his staff said he was on the Appalachian Trail, Sanford replied, “I don’t know.“

Lt. Governor Andre Bauer says that he requested a conversation with Governor Sanford, but was denied. Bauer says that he was told that the governor would return Wednesday.

Jenny Sanford told a CNN reporter, Tuesday afternoon, that she still had not spoken to her husband.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Jenny Sanford was still at the family beach house on Sullivan’s Island. News 2 requested an interview with her, but was told that she is not speaking to the press at this point.

Update from the Governor’s spokeman at 10 a.m. Tuesday:

Governor Sanford’s spokeman Joel Sawyer says the governor called to check in with his Chief of Staff this morning. He said it would be fair to say the governor was taken aback by all of the interest in his trip.

The Governor now says he plans on returning to the office Wednesday.

Tuesday afternoon Sen. John “Jake” Knotts issued the following statement:

“I’m happy to hear that Governor Sanford has finally contacted his office after being missing from the state for five days. While I believe every person deserves a vacation, our constitution gives only one man authority to act in case of an emergency – the Governor of South Carolina. Should the Governor decided to vacation away from South Carolina again, it is my sincere hope that he will take his security detail and keep his cell phone on so that he can be reached in case of a large-scale emergency. If he is not willing to do so, he should turn his gubernatorial authority over to the Lt. Governor.”

A representative for Governor Mark Sanford says the governor is hiking the Appalachian trail and taking some time away from the office this week to recharge after the stimulus battle and the last legislative session.  Joel Sawyer also says that before leaving last week, Sanford let staff know his whereabouts and that he’d be difficult to reach. Should any emergencies arise between the times in which he checks in, our staff would obviously be in contact with other state officials as the situation warrants before making any decisions.

Sanford’s wife, Jenny, told the Associated Press her husband has been gone for several days and she doesn’t know where he was, but he was not concerned.  She also told the Associated Press that Sanford did not contact her or their children on Father’s Day.

Governor Sanford is said to be working on projects that fell by the wayside.

According to AP reports,  Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer said he didn’t know where Sanford is but said he had not been put in charge.

News 2 spoke to Republican State Senator John “Jake” Knotts by phone this afternoon. He calls Sanford’s actions irresponsible. Knotts is worried first about Sanford’s safety, but more-so about who was watching the state.

We still are not sure where Sanford was, but authorities and Knotts say a cell phone signal was traced to the Atlanta area.

I completely support our governor. If there was a real emergency, he would have responded. He is allowed to have a private life. Stop hounding him. He is one of the few elected officials in the country who realizes it is wrong to keep spending and taxing. We all pay too much now. There are charities willing to help the needy. The government shouldn't support freeloaders, but rather train people to be productive members of society.

I'm not worried about our Governor. His interaction with his wife is none of our concern. He took some needed time for himself and our government was never in jeopardy. In case of emergency, we have established rules for action, besides, Gov. Sandord has the best insurance policy possible, Andre Bauer. Who would want as a Governor a man that drives too fast and flies too slow with entitlement issues. Thank GOD we have Sanford to try to keep the Legislature in line. Not his fault that they are putting us so deep in debt. He has done all he could to protect us.

What the heck is going on? I think that some people deliberately misled the press or there's more to this story. I think it's really great that he can escape from the stress and go hiking-----too bad that alternative is not available to a lot of his constituents who are unemployed and struggling with no relief in sight! Way to lead, Governor Sanford!

It appears the governor is somewhat unstable. There is a related post at http://iamsoannoyed.com/?p=1909

I'm about as concerned for our esteemed Governor as he was for all of us who were and are unemployed and were held "hostage" by his whims of whether or not to request more Federal dollars. Most of us did not choose to be unemployed, we'd much rather be working, and he acted like the unemployment checks were coming out of his own pocket! With a little luck, maybe he'll stay "lost" until his term expires. Nah, that's just wishful thinking on my part (and probably thousands of others).

Hmmmm. The Appalachain Trail ends about 80 miles from Atlanta...but the Gov's cell phone has been located in the city. This can mean only one thing! The governor has been eaten by a bear...who then took the phone to town looking to settle some scores with Michael Vick. Either that or the story about a walk in the woods is a bunch of bull

Yawn. I'm bored with those who keep insisting that Sanford's position on the stimulus was for "publicity" for a future presidential run. Those who regurgitate the talking points from the mainstream media are "lazy" because they don't bother to think for themselves or do their own research. Sanford has been a fiscal conservative throughout his political career. It's obvious that his position on the stimulus was NOT popular ~ guess that really helps if you want to run for president. The amount of money that he wanted to apply to the state's debt was less than 10% of the amount of money that the state of SC received from the crapulus bill - money that was literally stolen from the American people as far as I'm concerned ,since it is my tax dollars and I did not support the stimulus package. Yes, we need jobs in SC but those jobs need to originate from the private sector because once the stimulus money is gone, there is no means to continue any programs and/or jobs funded by it except by increasing taxes. BTW, if someone can demonstrate how to get out of debt by spending money, let the rest of us in on the secret.Otherwise, bite the bullet, live within your means and make our government do the same - that's what Sanford has been trying to do.
