Riley announces plans to renovate Historic City Market

Beginning in January 2010 Charleston’s historic City Market will undergo a two-phase restoration.

The first phase will include renovating the three open buildings between Church and East Bay Street.  The second phase will include the Market Hall Building between Meeting and Church Streets.

The City Market was established in 1804 and the first covered-building market of its kind in the country in 1841.

Local architect Glenn Keyes and team of experienced Charleston renovators are in charge of the project.  Many of the 265 vendors will set up in tents temporarily as their buildings are restored.

The management company plans to expand the Night Market when the restoration is completed.  The cost of the improvements will be paid from a revenue bond supported by income from the Market which Mayor Joe Riley will propose to City Council in November.
