South Carolina voters have picked John McCain for president, with bedrock Republicans thwarting new voters to give him the state’s eight electoral college votes.
The Associated Press called the race after polls closed. The call was based on an analysis of voter interviews, conducted for The Associated Press by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.
McCain’s campaign gathered steam after his primary win here in January, and he only returned once since then. The last Democratic president elected from South Carolina was Jimmy Carter.
Barack Obama won the primary in South Carolina and interest in his campaign brought out thousands of new voters. Blacks registered
to vote at nearly twice the rate of whites. Younger voters also favored the Democrat.
