More than 100 dead from motorcycle accidents this year in South Carolina

More than 100 motorcyclists have been killed this year on South Carolina roadways. The State of Columbia reports it’s the third year in a row motorcycle deaths have topped 100 in the state, although the total of 103 deaths reported through Tuesday is below the 119 biker deaths reported in the same period in 2007.

Safety officials say several factors contribute to motorcycle deaths, including inexperience. Bikers say it’s not hard to lose control of the heavy machines if a rider isn’t used to them.

Another factor is a lack of helmets. South Carolina has no mandatory helmet law for bikers 21 and over, and 78 percent of the 120 motorcycle riders killed in South Carolina last year weren’t wearing head protection.

Comment on motorcyclist killed in SC... as a motorcycle rider I am fully aware of the additional danger to roads present. But I do struggle when I see comments like 'Another factor is a lack of helmets. South Carolina has no mandatory helmet law for bikers 21 and over, and 78 percent of the 120 motorcycle riders killed in South Carolina last year weren’t wearing head protection'. So of the 78 percent that did not have helmets, what percent were killed because of head injuries? These type of comments suggest that if the 78 percent had warn a helmet they would have lived. If I recall the greatest percent injury is leg on motorcycles.. Thanks, Kipp
