Major need for volunteer guardian ad litems to help Lowcountry children
Published: April 20, 2009
There is a major need now for volunteers to help represent children who have been abused or neglected. The volunteer guardian ad litem program is a way you can give these kids a chance.
As a guardian, you learn about the child’s case, and meet with officials to help represent the child.
In Berkeley County, 79 guardians are serving 232 kids, but 58 had to be assigned to an attorney since there were not enough volunteers.
In Charleston County, 96 guardians are serving 270 children. 589 kids were assigned to an attorney last year because there were not enough volunteers.
You must be 21 or older, pass a background check and sign up for 30 hours of training to become a GAL.
