A jury has been seated for the Tampa federal trial of an Egyptian college student charged with carrying explosives.

A jury of 12 plus four alternates was picked Tuesday to hear the case against 23-year-old Youssef Samir Megahed.

The former University of South Florida engineering student is charged with transporting explosives and possessing a destructive device in a case tinged with terrorist overtones.

Megahed and another man were arrested in South Carolina in August 2007 after deputies said they found explosives in the trunk of their car during a traffic stop.

Defense attorneys say the items were homemade fireworks.

Opening statements from attorneys are expected Wednesday.
