Investigators say lightning might be what caused a fire that ripped through a Georgetown County church on Sunday.

News of the fire was overwhelming to some members of the Garden City Baptist Church congregation.

The church’s pastor said he’s thankful no one was hurt.

“The Church is the people, “ said Rev. Rich McLawhorn.  “It’s not a building. God is bigger than a building.  We are not going to miss a beat in our worship and our service for our lord
Jesus Christ.“

The church has 300 members.

For the time being, they will hold services in the gymnasium at St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

“They feel the loss as much as we do and recognize that anything they can do to help us and we said, you know, we would do the same thing for them,“ said parishioner Anita Lampley.
