The Department of Motor Vehicles says it has enough paid orders to begin making Christian-themed license plates in South Carolina despite a lawsuit challenging the move.

Agency spokeswoman Beth Parks said Monday it took fewer than three days to get 400 people to order and pay $5 to cover the additional cost of making the plates. The plates depict a stained-glass window with a cross and the words “I Believe” written on top.

Parks says the plates should be available in about a month. Legislators passed a law authorizing the tag this year.

Washington-based Americans United for Separation of Church and State have sued South Carolina officials. The group argues the plates amount to state sponsorship of a particular faith.
