The Sea Island Chapter of Habitat for Humanity is building “green” affordable housing on Wadmalaw Island. The Sea Island Chapter is the 3rd oldest affiliate of Habitat for Humanity in the entire world and is turning to new ways in building affordable housing.
“We feel we are responsible to make a statement and move forward and be progressive so we’re trying to be a leader in green building and affordable housing,“ said Nikke Seibert, Green Coordinator of the Sea Island Habitat for Humanity.
Along with providing an environmentally friendly home, Habitat for Humanity teach these new home owners “green” living tips.
“One of the most important things is home owner education. We teach the homeowner how to live a sustainable lifestyle and also why there home is green and how they can be better homeowners,“ explained Seibert.
Something that new homeowner Kennitha LaBoard is happy about, “low energy bills, who wouldn’t be excited, as a single mom it’s important not to have to worry about the cost.“
The goal of Sea Island Habitat for Humanity is build affordable housing environmentally friendly to keep the cost of living low for the new home owners.
