Governor Sanford releases new letter to the people of South Carolina

Governor Sanford’s office emailed this letter to News 2.  In it, he talks about how he plans to lead the state during his last 18 months in office.  The full copy of the letter of below for you to read…

By Mark Sanford

I have struggled with how best to convey my regret in letting so many down, and in that regard I realize this op-ed does not do justice to the process of saying “I am sorry.” A handwritten note or phone call would ultimately be more appropriate, but given the number of people I need to apologize to I write this to begin the journey of trying to get things more right with you and others.

It is true that I did wrong and failed at the largest of levels, but equally true is the fact that God can make good of our respective wrongs in life. In this vein, while none of us has the chance to attend our own funeral, in many ways I feel like I was at my own in the past weeks, and surprisingly I am thankful for the perspective it has afforded.

If you ever have the misfortune of being at this point, whether self-induced as in my case or not, it will give you an indeed amazing perspective on life and on what really matters. I read notes from someone who worked in a sandwich shop I ate at ten years ago, from 7th grade classmates, from state employees and more. While there have been lifetimes of lessons learned over the past weeks, three things most immediately come to mind.

One, forgiveness and grace really do matter. I used to believe that at an intellectual level, now it is at the level of heart. Over my life I have not given enough of either, and yet given all the ways in which my failings have come to light, I write to apologize for, in the most profound of ways, letting you and so many others down.  In life it’s always the people closest to us that we hurt the most, and given my standing of public trust, I know I’ve hurt many across our state.  I apologize for this, and more than anything would ask for your forgiveness going forward.

Two, life is indeed about way more than public standing or political views, it’s about recognizing that none of us are the arbiters of truth, that there are moral absolutes, and that there is a God to whom we will all report for our actions.  My failure has been most glaring on this front, where no public apology can make wrong right.  As a consequence, it is on this plane that I’ve grown the most over the past weeks – and where I’m committed to growing the most going forward.

I’ve been humbled and broken as never before in my life and as a consequence have given up areas of control in a way that I never have before – and it is my belief that this will make me a better father, husband, friend and advocate.

It’s in the spirit of making good from bad that I am committing to you and the larger family of South Carolinians to use this experience to both trust God in his larger work of changing me, and from my end, to work to becoming a better and more effective leader.

In this regard I think all that has transpired will be particularly relevant in the way I deal with the legislative body and other state leaders going forward. Micah 6:8 asks us to do justice, love mercy, and to walk humbly, and as I begin these steps into the last 18 months of this administration, it will indeed be with a more contrite and humble spirit.

I’ve realized that as much as I have and will continue to advocate for things ranging from restructuring to responsible spending to school choice, my approach needs to be less about my will and more about looking for ways to more humbly present the greater principals and ideas at play. It needs to be less strident and more about finding ways to work with legislative leaders to advance the ideas so many of us believe in. It means less time fighting the tide - and a greater awareness of the fact that God controls it. In working with a few alterations to my approach, I think this could be a far more productive last session than the one that would have been had the tragedy that has unfolded not occurred, and in turn, people’s lives can be made better.

Finally it is at your funeral that you in many ways not only can see most clearly the things that really matter in life, but where one gets the best glimpse of who your real friends are – and how much they matter. For that reason, I want to thank so many for their kindnesses and support over the years and for their kindness in this latest chapter in our book together as South Carolinians.

Well, frankly the roots of your aggressiveness have nothing to do with my passiveness, so.... lets not twist the reality here... I also think you keep missing my major points, so it makes no sense to have a discussion with....the radio. And thirdly, I am not from SC and do not really know much about Mr.Sanford other than what the media has presented, so maybe in a sense I am not a valuable member of the discussion comity anyway. I will be his supporter however up to the moment new facts change the way I view his actions. Wishing calm and joyful participation the discussion to all of you!

Yea for passive, aggressive behavior!! Go team tovasamaz!! "This case is a dead one for me. I have no time to keep thinking about Governor Sanford." This is the philosophy of people who do not care about our state!

Mistake again. Never smoked, even cigarettes, but if you say so... And....I am not greatly impressed with your kindness, but.....I am not going to comment more on it. If you have to use the internet to calm down your emotions, I don't really mind it. This case is a dead one for me. I have no time to keep thinking about Governor Sanford. He will be fine, I am sure. But you brother, if you really want to do something about it, i hope you will be willing to arm yourself with enough patience to find out the whole truth about those money that were spent. And you know what, persistence and fairness, these are the key words in every investigation, not aggressiveness and blind rudeness. Ciao! Sleep calmly!

Wow, tovasamaz, I want some of what you are smoking!! I don't think people are trying to "judge" the governor-I think they are thinking about what is best for this state. Isn't that the issue???

Sorry, I want to continue. there is one more reason I support him. I am not a hypocrite. America is the country with the highest divorce rate in the world and every time a politician sleeps with somebody that is a huge problem. I don't get it. Aren't we all humans at the end? The unrealistic, hypocritical expectations of the society makes lairs out of politicians. They have to redefine sex in their struggle to keep face in front of the society (Clinton's case) and God knows what else. Everything will be different if we respected more the rights of people to be happy and we were to judge others the way we judge ourselves. Please, think about it, if you want, of course. Best of luck to you all!

It is so nice to read emotional responses. It is also very interesting for me to see how we people make mistakes in all we do- we are simply destined, due to the functioning of our brain, to see the world through the glasses of our own background. My dear, I am an atheist - threw the bible after the first page when I was 12; could not read anymore; refused to be threatened with punishment if I don't follow the rules. So I live by my own rules(the rules of my family, culture) - and fairness is at their very base. My heart is full of love to people around me not because someone teaches me that, but because it happens naturally to me. As I breath, my body generates kindness, thoughtlessness and love. What can I do? I just feel that if I judge this man too harsh I will be wrong, that is all. I think he had suffered a lot and will continue because of his choice. But.... he is entitled to his own decisions and I wish him only the best. Sometimes I think all of you who are against him are right. Who knows, maybe! And i agree with you about the accountability if he had misused state money, but once again i do not think I have enough information to form an emotionally charged conclusion. And as you had probably guessed, nothing and noone can convinced me to do that - only the whole truth, the facts. Wishing great weekend to all of you!

Maybe the Governor should focus more on education so that passoinate people don't come across as barely educated. When he admits to wrongly using taxpayer dollars for trips to his hot little piece of a**, I don't need much more evidence. Nothing disgusts me more than the voting constituents that cannot differentiate between their religious beliefs and this country. I realize I'm in the Bible belt, but for some of these people to accept the illegal actions of this governor just because he's a "devout" Christian and they share in his beliefs...I don't think any of them even vaguely understand what the Founding Fathers wanted to make (set your Bible aside and read the "Federalist Papers"). Does South Carolina want to be a church or a State? Your governor was adamently rejecting stimulus funds while stealing tax payer dollars for an affair!?! The religious community has come out to support him, that's great, but how about supporting him while still holding him accountable to the laws that also gave you the freedom to practice your religion? Do you people even recognize the difference between the Bible and the Constitution? Maybe some people should pick up a history book on Saturday before they go to church on Sunday.

Anyone else notice that he said there were THREE things that he's been focused on lately... yet he only discussed TWO? Oi vey, South Carolinians, let's please elect someone with common sense and intellect next time.

What is the definition of justify? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justify We have a governor who is "confused, stressed and simply seeking what we all seek - understanding , acceptance, love." Maybe he should find the things he is seeking before he can put our(the people of South Carolina) best interest to work.
