Governor Sanford speaking at the Summerville Rotary Club asked for forgiveness for “moral failures” and for help to make the most of his remaining 16 months in office.
Immediately after taking the podium Sanford address his personal life which he called the “elephant in the room.“
“I want to say the obvious, which is I’m sorry for letting many of you down, and that I apologize and that I ask for your forgiveness,“ said Sanford to a group which consists of some of his longest political supporters.
“I’ve certainly brought lemons to this state,“ said Sanford, “but the key is sticking around to see how God will make lemonade.“
Sanford addressed his legislative agenda for the next session and preferred to talk about spending limits rather than comment on his wife Jenny Sanford’s revealing interview with Vogue magazine. Mrs. Sanford expressed pity toward her husband’s mistress and said his relationship to the Argentinian woman was an addiction, similar to some men’s struggles with pornography.
“I’ve said all I’m going to say about my marriage, we’re working on that privately,“ responded Sanford to a direct question about his wife’s ascertion the “ball is in his court” with repairing their marriage.
Sanford reiterated that his political career is finished after this term but hopes South Carolinians can put aside their disappointment with his personal life and try to work together with him on making financial reforms.
His only response to questions about the ethics probe on his use of state airplanes was to say he has not enlisted an attorney.
