Goose Creek police on Monday said a thief stole four bags of money from the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on James Street.
Police said the money, estimated to be between three and four thousand dollars, was collected from three different masses on Saturday and Sunday.
Church officials told police that the money was in a lock box that had only one key.
Police said someone from the church described a possible suspect, a man in a suit coming from the room where the money was kept and carrying a large pillow case under his arm.
