Fort Moultrie exhibit recalls slave trade
Published: February 27, 2009
Hundreds of thousands of slaves who came to the shores of the United States passed by, and some were kept for a time on, Sullivans Island on Charleston Harbor.
A new exhibit at Fort Moultrie recalls the island’s infamous role in the international slave trade.
The exhibit tells the story of how, after arriving from Africa, some slaves had to spend 10 days in quarantine in pest houses on the island just across the harbor from Charleston. It’s not known exactly how many were quarantined there.
Michael Allen, an education specialist with the National Park Service, says he hopes the exhibit can serve as a place of healing and awareness. Historians estimate as many as 360,000 slaves were brought to Charleston from Africa.
